
Program A Heavy Equipment Operator-Beginner
This course is offered to students with little or no equipment operating experience.
Course Objective
To attain the fundamental knowledge required to layout and grade in excavation sites, and to acquire the fundamental skills necessary to safely and effectively operate a backhoe/loader, excavator, skid-steer and dump truck. The Beginner Heavy Equipment Operator course is a comprehensive curriculum including the fundamental subject matter in web-based training (WBT), computer-based training (CBT) and simulator training (ST) in addition to theoretical (classroom) and practical (field training) aspects of grade reading, excavation and heavy equipment operation. The complete curriculum consists of 160 hours of classroom training and 320 hours of equipment and field training. The Heavy Equipment Operator Beginner, consist of Orientation to the Trade, Heavy Equipment Safety, Identification of Heavy Equipment, Basic Operation Techniques, Instruction in Construction Math, Basic Rigging, Civil Blueprint Reading, Soils, Grade Staking & Checking, Backhoes, Bulldozers, Dump Trucks, Excavators, Loaders, Skid Steer, Advanced Safety, Advanced Operational Techniques, Flagger Certification and Commercial Driver’s License Class B Prep. The graduate will receive a DC Board of Industrial Trades Operators Apprentice License and become a NCCER-Nationally Certified Heavy Equipment Operator, proficient in operating the equipment to acquire an entry level position.

This course is offered to students with some equipment operating experience.
Course Objective

Program C Heavy Equipment Operator-FastTrack
This course is offered to students with at least one (1) year heavy equipment operating experience.
Course Objective
To meet the needs of certain students and employer’s, HETA’s offers a three week Fast Track course designed for Refresher, Remedial or Entry-level instruction on one piece of heavy equipment. Student will be familiarized on the function and operation of a specific piece of equipment. The student will receive supervised, direct hands-on operation of the equipment with classroom instruction in principles of operation, work site safety and preventive maintenance procedures, advanced safety and advanced operational techniques. Upon successful completion the student will receive a certificate of completion for training on specific heavy equipment. The FastTrack courses include: FT1-Backhoe, FT2-Excavator, FT3-Dozer, and FT4-Wheel/Track Loader

Course Objective
The Dump Truck Operator program consist of the basic principals of preventive maintenance, operation, site safety and positioning, hauling, loading and material capacities, unloading and spreading techniques, weight scales and weight restrictions, drop axles, equipment trailers and driver responsibilities. The program is designed to provide dump truck driving fundamentals to students who have minimal or no dump truck driving experience. The graduate will be proficient in operating a dump truck to acquire an entry level position and qualified to take the Class B CDL license exam.

Program J Land Surveyor Technician – Spring 2010
Course Objective
This program provides technical Pre-Intern training to students interested in a career as a surveyor and topographic drafter. Training begins with a topical overview of mathematics and principles of measurement. Subsequent coursework trains students to perform linear, transit, topographic, hydrographic, and city surveying. Successful program graduates are able to: Discuss the principles involved in measuring lengths and angles used in surveying. Identify and use the various common surveying instruments. Explain the fundamentals of law for surveyors. Describe the methods used to perform topographic and city surveying. Explain the surveying techniques used for laying out highways and highway curves. Read and interpret architects' drawings and construction blueprints. This program will prep students for entry-level positions in surveying, Government and Engineering firms as a surveying crew member. Training Standards
Training standards will be laid out in the objective statement for each phase of training. The objective statement will clearly state what the students capability and knowledge will be at the end of each phase of training. Although the course is laid out in hours, n Heavy Equipment Training Academy focus will be to "Train to the standard and not time." Simply stated, if a student meets the objective and they can perform the standard, but circumstances prevent them from completing the hours in a block, they will be allowed to progress to training. Performing to the standard also includes the minimum requirements in our Grading System and Satisfactory Academic Progress.
Training Deviations
Heavy Equipment Training Academy reserves the right to deviate from the established training schedule/course chart in the event of inclement weather or any other unforeseen circumstance. If weather/equipment malfunctions prevents laboratory operations, training will be conducted in the classroom until laboratory operations can continue.
Instructor/Student Ratio
Heavy Equipment Training Academy will attempt to maintain the following Instructor/student ratio:
Classroom: 1 instructor for every 15 students
Laboratory: 1 instructor to 4 pieces of equipment/4 students(see note)
NOTE: If the heavy equipment is available, Instructor to student ratio in the Laboratory may increase to 5 pieces of heavy equipment per Instructor with the use of radio communications between instructors and students.
Student to Equipment Ratio
Heavy Equipment Training Academy will attempt to maintain the following student/equipment ratio:
Equipment: 3 students for every 1 piece of equipment/vehicle
Class size will normally be based on a 3 to 1 student to equipment ratio. The optimum class size will be based on student load and equipment on hand. Heavy Equipment Training Academy will adjust class sizes to meet industry/student demands based on the above cited ratios.
